The original gazette notice shows that Joseph Kipchumba Lagat was appointed for the role.

A screengrab of a gazette notice shared on X on October 11, 2024, claiming that President William Ruto had appointed Charlene Ruto as the new chairperson to the National Mining Corporation has been altered.

The accompanying post reads, “ President William Ruto has appointed his daughter Charlene Ruto as the New Chairperson National Mining Corporation. We don’t have a country here.”

The gazette notice was similarly shared on other X accounts.

To determine the authenticity of the document, Woman Kenya Network reviewed the official Gazette Notice issued on October 3, 2024. The original gazette notice confirmed the three-year appointment of Joseph Kipchumba Lagat as the chairperson of the National Mining Corporation.

Further, the Ministry of Blue Economy, Mining, and Maritime Affairs, through its X account, flagged the screengrab as fake.

The ministry dismissed the reported appointment and clarified that Joseph Lagat is the correctly appointed chairperson of the National Mining Corporation.

Further, Charlene Ruto, in a post on her X page, dismissed the notice, calling it fake and urging people to avoid spreading misinformation.

She wrote, “Guys..c’mon…seriously?? Tuwache fake news! And looks like this doesn’t know @WilliamRuto. He believes in giving equal, fair, and transparent leadership opportunities to as many Kenyans as possible, so trust me, this he would not do. Na mining tena? Not even youth? Or agriculture? Just so you know it is really fake! Wacha niendeleze @typn_i na @smachs_org…I didn’t wait for anyone to give me an appointment or position. I am creating my own path. Plus…my name is Chelagat, not Chelangat. Don’t support this propaganda!”

The clarification of the correct appointment was also reported on local media outlets such as Capital FM, Kenyans.co.ke, and The Star.

Woman Kenya looked into a screengrab claiming that Charlene Ruto had been appointed as the New Chairperson to the National Mining Corporation through a gazette notice and found it to be altered.

His Eminence is alive

This post published on September 27, 2024, alleging the death of John Cardinal Njue, is false.

“BREAKING: John Cardinal Njue is dead,” reads the Tiktok video’s caption.

The news of Cardinal Njue’s passing was also shared on X and WhatsApp.

However, Woman Kenya Network established that the claim is false.

An official statement made by the Catholic church on its official Facebook account, Archdiocese of Nairobi, stated that the claim was false.

“His Eminence John Cardinal Njue is alive, and we ask that everyone disregards these baseless

rumors. We kindly urge all to refrain from sharing or entertaining unverified information, particularly on sensitive matters such as this. Should there be any official communication regarding His

Eminence’s health or any other matter, it will be conveyed through official Church channels,” reads part of the statement.

The church also flagged the information circulating on social media, particularly Facebook, as false, and urged people to stop spreading unverified claims.

Renowned priest Father Charles Kinyua, in a Facebook post, also dismissed the rumors about Cardinal John Njue’s health, assuring the public that he had spoken with the Cardinal, who is in good health.

Moreover, mainstream media outlets, including Capital FM, Citizen Digital, and The Standard, also reported that Cardinal Njue is alive and well.

Additionally, His Eminence on October 12, 2024, attended the episcopal installation of Reverend Wallace Ng’ang’a as the Catholic Military Ordinariate at Ulinzi Sports Complex.

The retired Archbishop relinquished his position in 2021 after leading the archdiocese for 14 years.

Woman Kenya Network looked into the claim alleging the cardinal had died, and found it to be false.

The video is from May 2023.

This post on X (formerly Twitter) accompanied by a video of the World Health Organization(WHO) Director-General, Tedros Ghebreyesus, allegedly retracting his alert on the Mpox global health emergency is false.

The post reads: “The head of the WHO backtracking has declared (“on the advice of the experts”)that monkeypox is now NOT a global health emergency. What happened in a week to change his mind? Have the patriots got the situation under control?”

The video was also shared on other accounts.

To establish the veracity of the post, Woman Kenya Network conducted a reverse search image on Google which revealed that the video was shared on multiple X (formerly Twitter) accounts particularly in August 2024.

A deeper investigation using a keyword search on Google uncovered a 1-minute, 30-second YouTube clip published on May 11, 2023, titled “Mpox No Longer a Global Health Emergency, WHO Declares.”

In the video, WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus announces the reversal of the global health emergency status for Mpox. He emphasizes, however, that countries should continue implementing measures to manage and control the disease, similar to ongoing efforts with COVID-19.

Further investigation revealed that between 2022 and 2023, a significant global outbreak of Mpox (formerly known as Monkeypox) occurred, with over 90,000 reported cases across 110 countries, largely attributed to the Clade 2b strain. However, WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reversed the emergency alert on May 11, 2023, after the second emergency committee meeting, indicating a shift in the status of the outbreak as cases began to decline and control measures took effect.

In 2024, WHO declared a global health emergency of international concern on August 15 following the detection of a deadlier variant of Mpox. This declaration was in response to the upsurge in cases reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring countries. The resurgence of Mpox cases, coupled with the emergence of this more dangerous variant, has reignited concerns and calls for coordinated international action to contain the outbreak.

Independent fact-checkers, Newschecker and PesaCheck also flagged the viral video as false.

Woman Kenya Network investigated the viral video claiming that WHO had lifted the August 2024 global health emergency declaration on Mpox and found it to be false.

The original graphic does not include the projected percentages.

A digital card allegedly attributed to NTV circulated widely on X (formerly Twitter)showing projections of the African Union Commission chairperson candidates have been altered. The graphic was shared alongside a post that read:” BREAKING: CONMAN Raila will Lose AUC Chairperson SEAT. It is no LONGER a secret!”

The graphic features the four AUC candidates seemingly with their corresponding ratings in percentages.

The card was also shared on other X accounts.

Kenya’s Raila Odinga, Mahmoud Ali Youssou from Djibouti, Anil Kumarsingh Gayan from Mauritius, and Richard James Randriamandrato from Madagascar are the four candidates vying for.

r the African Union Commission’s top seat, with elections expected to take place in February 202Woman Kenya Network conducted a comprehensive investigation and concluded that the projected percentages on the digital card were likely added onto the graphic, as revealed through forensic image analysis on Fotoforensic.

Further investigation, using a reverse image search on Google, led to a post on NTV’s Facebook page with the original digital card, published on August 7, 2024. The authentic graphic only displayed the names, images, and countries of the AUC candidates. The digital card was also shared across other social media platforms, including NTV’s official X(formerly Twitter) account.

The recent USAWA workshop brought together a passionate group of stakeholders from government, civil society, and the private sector, united by a shared mission: to strengthen healthcare systems in Kenya’s counties. Catherine Changwony, Nakuru County’s Chief Officer of ICT, set the tone, underscoring the urgent need for strategic partnerships that would elevate healthcare delivery across counties. Her words echoed the collective desire to turn vision into action, transforming health services for the communities that need them most.

Transparency and accountability took center stage as Titus Gitonga from Transparency International (TI) called on journalists to champion truth and integrity. He reminded participants that the stories they tell can shape a nation, fostering public trust and holding leadership accountable. Ambrose Kilonzo of the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya spoke with deep conviction about empowering faith leaders to promote health at the grassroots level, leveraging their moral influence to inspire change within communities.

From the private sector, Zak Irungu of Global Compact Network Kenya(GCNK) reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to ethical business practices. His call to action was clear: combat fraud and abuse in the health sector, and in doing so, restore faith in healthcare systems.

AMWIK’s Executive Director, Queenter Mbori, and Lorna Sempele brought the focus back to the power of collaboration and transparency, urging all participants to work together for stronger, more accountable health governance. Their words were a reminder that only through united effort can meaningful progress be made.

Professor Silas Oriaso painted a sobering picture of county health communication departments as the workshop progressed, highlighting the resource challenges that hinder their effectiveness. Yet, despite these obstacles, there was a shared determination to overcome them.

One of the most pressing topics was transitioning from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Authority (SHA). Victoria Wachu from SHA addressed the complexities of this shift, calling for clear, empathetic communication to reassure the public and build trust during the transition.

The workshop concluded with powerful discussions on combating healthcare fraud. Participants left with a renewed sense of responsibility, recognizing that integrity and collaboration are the foundations of universal health coverage. Through collective action, they took a significant step toward a future where every Kenyan has access to quality healthcare, driven by transparency and shared purpose.

There are stories so gut-wrenching that they leave a lasting scar on your soul. I recently came across one that broke me and made my heart heavy with a pain that was not mine but felt personal, and deep. A Mombasa blogger was violently assaulted; brutally sodomized and gang-raped while being recorded by his perpetrators, in broad daylight. I want you to imagine that for a second. Broad. Daylight. His dignity is stripped away in the open for the world to see, while we remain largely unmindful of the silent cries of men like him.

How do you heal from something so vile, so dehumanizing? How do you stitch together the pieces of yourself when the very essence of your being has been ripped apart? I cannot begin to fathom it. The thought of it alone makes me sick with rage, with sorrow, with disbelief.

Another experience came from a close friend, a kind soul who five women had raped. You read that right. Five women. But here is the cruel twist: he does not even consider it rape. In his mind, because it involved women, he somehow believes it could not have been an assault. His confusion is heartbreaking. Society has trained him, like so many men, to minimize his trauma, to laugh off what would be a horrific violation if the roles were reversed.

It is time we talk about the uncomfortable truth; 14% of reported rapes involve men or boys. These are not just statistics; they represent lives forever altered, voices silenced by shame and society’s refusal to recognize their pain. One in six reported sexual assault involves a boy. One in 25 consists of a man. Let that sink in. These men and boys are our brothers, our friends, our colleagues. Yet, when we think of rape, men do not even come to mind.

For every man who comes forward, how many others bury their trauma in the depths of shame, too afraid to speak out, too scared to be ridiculed, to be told “Men don’t get raped!” And in that silence, they suffer, broken from within while the world looks the other way.

This is not just about male survivors; it is about all of us. It is about dismantling a culture that refuses to see sexual violence as it truly is, an atrocity that does not discriminate. It is about acknowledging the ugly reality that men, too, are victims, and they deserve the same empathy, the same rage, and the same fight for justice that we demand for women.

We must break this silence. We must stop shaming, start listening, and start believing. Because every survivor deserves to be heard. Every single one. We must acknowledge that sexual violence doesn’t discriminate, and every victim’s trauma is valid, regardless of their gender.

The video was taken in 2021 and is of Gachagua talking about MCAs being given 2M car grants to pass the BBI during President Uhuru’s regime

This post on X(formerly Twitter) accompanied by a video claiming that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua admitted to legislators being bribed with KSh 2m to pass the 2024 Finance Bill is false.

The post, dated August 3, 2024, reads: “Finally Riggy G confesses MPs were bribed 2mil…I’m here for such moments.”

The accompanying video, originally uploaded on TikTok, is titled “GLOVES OFF, GACHAGUA ACCUSES RUTO OF BRIBING MPS TO PASS FINANCE BILL.”

In the video, Deputy Gachagua is addressing a gathering and says: “Wakaongea wakasema basi mwambie Rais kama anataka tupitishe, sisi tunataka hongo, ya shilingi milioni mbili. Rais akakubali. Hiyo ni ufisadi ama si ufisadi?”

This translates to: “They spoke and said, then tell the President if he wants us to pass, we want a bribe of two million shillings. The President agreed. Is that corruption or not corruption?”

The viral video was widely shared across X(formerly Twitter) on August 7, 2024, appearing on multiple accounts.

Woman Kenya Network thoroughly investigated the keyframes using InVid-WeVerify through reverse image searches on Google, Yandex, Bing, and TinEye, but did not bear any fruit.

A keyword search on YouTube led to a similar video posted on February 2, 2021, titled: “Smell of corruption-Rigathi Gachagua reveals secret behind MCA’s with 2 million car grant each.”

To further authenticate the findings, a subsequent reverse image search of a screengrab from the video revealed that the video had been published on Facebook (archive link here) on January 31, 2021.

The similarity between the TikTok video (left) and Standard Media(right) of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua

A further keyword search uncovered the video was also published by Standard Media (archive link here) on February 1, 2021.

In the video, Gachagua, the then Mathira Member of Parliament, accused President Uhuru Kenyatta of bribing Mount Kenya Members of County Assembly(MCAs) with 2 million car grants to pass the Building Bridges Initiative(BBI).

Gachagua’s remarks came days after President Uhuru Kenyatta visited the region where in a meeting with the region’s leadership including MCAs, Kenyatta promised to push for a 2 million car grant each, if they would pass the BBI.

Earlier in June 2024, Members of Parliament who voted in favor of the now withdrawn Finance Bill,2024, were accused of receiving a 2 million bribe beforehand. However, Juja MP George Koimburi, who initially made the accusations, publicly apologized during the July 23, 2024 parliamentary proceedings.

Images of Juja MP Hon.
Later on June 29, 2024, Gachagua, also known as Riggy G, defended the legislators and dismissed bribery allegations, urging the public to respect their leaders.

Fourteen years have elapsed since Kenya’s 2010 Constitution established the two-thirds gender rule, yet, its full implementation remains elusive. Women civil society organizations, politicians, legislators, and the media continue highlighting persistent barriers and delays.

On August 23, 2024, the Freedom Café, a collaborative event organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF)-Kenya and the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK), brought together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for advancing women’s empowerment and expediting the implementation of Kenya’s Two-Thirds Gender Rule.

Ann Ireri, Executive Director for the Federation of Women Lawyers(FIDA) and High Court Advocate

Ann Ireri, the keynote speaker at the event, addressed the ongoing struggle for gender equality in Kenya. She highlighted the role of Gen Z in promoting accountability and transparency and called for a shift in narrative to more seriously address women’s issues.

“The Gen Z movement has brought a renewed quest for accountability and transparency,” said Ireri. “To realize the promise for women, we must also address broader issues affecting our democracy.”

Queenter Mbori, Executive Director, Association for Media Women in Kenya(AMWIK), and CEO and Founder, Woman Kenya Network

In her speech, Queenter Mbori advocated for a multi-faceted approach involving media, civil society, and policymakers. She reaffirmed AMWIK’s commitment to amplifying women’s voices in the media and emphasized, “The path to achieving the two-thirds gender role requires a concerted effort among all stakeholders,”

Stefan Schott reiterated that the Two-Thirds Gender Rule is crucial for achieving balanced representation in political and decision-making positions.

“Today’s Freedom’s Café offers an opportunity to reflect on these challenges, explore strategies to fast track the adoption of the two-thirds gender rule, and reaffirm our commitment to gender equality as a cornerstone in our democracy,” remarked Schott.

Mustapha Dumbuya, Deputy Director for African Programs and Journalists for Human Rights, highlighted the severe underrepresentation of women in Kenyan media noting that women make up only 19% of media representation. He emphasized that women are often depicted in cases of rape or femicide rather than being celebrated for their achievements. “The media does not provide women with the opportunity to be recognized for their successes,” said Dumbuya.

Prof. Nancy Booker, Associate Professor and the Dean at the Graduate School of Media and Communications, emphasized Academia’s critical role in advancing gender equality in and shaping public discourse. She advocated for initiatives such as offering fellowships, mentorship programs, and gender-focused training. Prof. Booker called for the establishment of gender desks in both police stations and newsrooms to ensure comprehensive support and representation for women.

The video is of Addis Ababa protests in September 2018.

This post on X (formerly Twitter) with a video claiming to show the NaneNane march in Kenya is false.

The August 8 post reads, “Wueh..Energy Energy.AMPLIFY. Inject💉💉#NanenaneMarch #NaneNane Opiyo Wandayi Nairobi CBD Thika Road Ruiru Moi Avenue HAPPENING NOW #RutoMustGo.”

The post was accompanied by a video showing a huge crowd chanting as they marched through the streets.

The NaneNane march followed nationwide protests in Kenya in June and July 2024 which erupted in response to the now-withdrawn Finance Bill 2024. The youth-led movement eventually morphed into a broader movement against bad governance with a one million people mega protest dubbed ‘NaneNane March’ slotted for 8 August. Aside from bad governance, the demonstrators also demanded accountability for police brutality, killings, and abductions.

To determine the clip’s authenticity, WOKN conducted a reverse search image on Google which revealed that the clip had also been widely shared during the June 25, 2024, Anti-Finance Bill protests popularly known by the hashtags #RejectFinanceBill2024 and #OccupyParliament. The clip then resurfaced during the Nanenane March on multiple X accounts.

The reverse search also led to an Instagram post dated April 4, 2024, captioned “Join us in raising our voices to halt the demolition in Addis Ababa 💔 Let’s stand together against genocide and forced displacement in Addis Ababa and across Ethiopia. It’s time to demand justice and protect our communities.✊🏾 #StopGenocide #Ethiopia #Africa Unite”

A deeper dive using keyword searches led us to a YouTube video with the same footage as in the post under scrutiny published on September 20, 2018, titled ”Addis Ababa protest”.

According to reports, thousands of Ethiopians took to the capital’s streets on September 17, 2018, in response to the ethnic killings of 23 people(page 32) in Addis Ababa’s outskirts. The demonstrations challenged Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, whose reform efforts, including tightening security, have come under intense scrutiny.

The burning plane is a refurbished aircraft situated at Uhuru Park.

This post by an X(formerly Twitter) user claiming that angry Kenyan youth set ablaze the presidential private jet is false.

The post, published on 1st July, 2024, reads: “KENYA’S JET SET ABLAZE BY RAMPAGING YOUTH.

Angry Kenyan youth have burnt down a presidential private jet being used by their president. This is the shape of things unfolding in Africa. Amen.”

The accompanying video was originally shared on TikTok and shows people torching a plane with the captions: “Preparing the plane for burning,” “Kenya Protestors set Ruto’s jet on fire,” and #RejectFinanceBill2024.”

The video was also shared here and here.

The video was shared amidst widespread protests in the country over the Finance Bill and displays of opulence by members of President William Ruto’s government despite increasing the cost of living for Kenyan citizens.

Among the causes of outrage leading up to the protests was Ruto’s state visit to the US in May 2024. The trip sparked controversy in Kenya over the use of a private jet with the public expressing strong dissatisfaction over the amount spent on Ruto’s travel expenses.

WOKN, however, established that the plane in question was not Ruto’s private jet.

Through a reverse image search on Google, WOKN found that the video was shot at Uhuru Park during the protests on 25 June 2024. Local media outlets and other social media users shared images and videos of the incident as seen here, here, here, here, and here confirming the incident took place at Uhuru Park, Nairobi, Kenya.

A comparison of the burning plane VS the plane Ruto used during his visit to the US.

Refurbished plane set ablaze at Uhuru Park

Uhuru park underwent renovations under the guidance of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services and among the new features added was a refurbished plane that was to be converted into a restaurant.

Additionally, Google Maps’ Street View further established that there is indeed a plane located at the park.

Google Map view of re-modeled plane at Uhuru Park

The park was later declared closed to the public until further notice following the protests.

WOKN looked into the claim that the alleged President Ruto’s private jet was set ablaze and found it to be false.
