Here was an organization that understood that every designer’s collection, every piece of beadwork, and every stitch carried a story waiting to be told.

The protagonist of our tale doesn’t wear sequins or carry a designer bag. Instead, it carries something far more precious: the dreams and aspirations of countless Kenyan creatives. Under the guidance of its founder, Ingred Awuor, The Kenyan Fashion Story has become a storyteller, a mentor, and a bridge builder all at once.

Writing New Chapters

On September 2, 2024, at Barrels & Stools in Westlands, The Kenyan Fashion Story wrote one of its most compelling chapters yet. The event wasn’t just a showcase; it was a declaration. Ten designers Evanic, Jie Designs, Single Needle, Lepasumi, Ayieta Beaded It, Walya Design, Nekoyta Leather, Threads Intel, She Soka, and Eunike Fashion House; came together under its banner, each adding their unique voice to the narrative.

Additionally, the all-women team behind the event wasn’t just a coincidence but a testament to the platform’s role in reshaping industry dynamics. In a sector historically dominated by external influences, The Kenyan Fashion Story stands as a beacon of local empowerment and female leadership.

Crafting Tomorrow’s Narrative

Like any compelling protagonist, The Kenyan Fashion Story has ambitious goals that drive its journey forward. Its mission reads like a manifesto for change: to feature 20 raw and authentic stories annually, reaching audiences beyond borders; to mentor 100 young creatives each year; and to facilitate five collaborative projects annually that foster industry growth.

But perhaps its most revolutionary act is the way it’s redefining success in the fashion industry. Through its lens, success isn’t measured just in sales or runway appearances, but in stories told, connections made, and barriers broken. The platform has become a masterclass in how to preserve cultural authenticity while pushing the boundaries of contemporary fashion.

As The Kenyan Fashion Story continues to unfold, its impact ripples through the industry. Biannual events build community. Post-event forums transform into educational sanctuaries. Marketing strategies aim to boost engagement by 30% in two years. Each initiative is a carefully crafted paragraph in this ongoing narrative of transformation.

The platform’s approach to international fashion is equally strategic. By targeting participation in three major international fashion events annually, it’s not just sharing Kenyan fashion it’s positioning Kenya as a fashion authority. Through its lens, local designers aren’t just participants in the global fashion dialogue; they’re influential voices shaping it.

Distinguished speakers graced the occasion, including luminaries such as Jane Karuku, the CEO of EABL; Coach Vuyanzi, a certified life coach; Joy Mdivo, the Executive Director of the East Africa Centre of Law and Justice; Carole Mandi, the host, and Founder CEO of Pivoting In Heels; Yvette Ondachi, the Regional Director at Sinapis.

“The love you give always comes back. Give it in big portions and it will come back in the same measure. Seek your confidence from wherever you are. Self-confidence is the hardest part of our life,” said Jane Karuku the CEO, of East African Breweries Limited, commonly referred to as EABL. “Stop talking yourself out of your dreams. Ensure the choice of your company is supportive of your life dreams. Stay away from bubble bursters,” she added.

Also in attendance was Mercy Wanjau, serving as the Secretary to the Cabinet; Solomon Wangwe, the Managing Director of Grand Acres LTD; Dr. Amakove Wala, an accomplished entrepreneur, and health systems expert; Dr. Susan Onyancha, famously known as Madam President and CEO of BF SUMA; and Agnes Gathaiya, the Country Director of Google East Africa.

“I walk naked so that other people can be clothed. The hate on social media mostly comes from a space of hatred. Hurt people hurt others. And they project their hurt on other people as their small way to feel better. Do not fall for their trap. They can abuse and insult me as they wish. It’s not what they call me, it’s what I respond to,” said Dr. Amakove Wala, Founder of Wanderlust Diaries, Ltd.

The central theme that resonated throughout the event was “Winning in Private,” encapsulating the shared ambition to empower women in leadership roles. The attendees embraced the dress code of white and/or fuschia, creating a visually captivating ambiance.
